The battle for Urth has begun. Seven ferocious dinosuars battle each
other, for dominance over the entire Urth. Primal Rage is a Fighting
game between numberous dinosaurs and primates. The game claims to play
almost exactly like the arcade, but that isn't entirly true. Primal
Rage is rated Teen(T) for animated blood and gore.
Graphics [6/10]:
It looks like the developer tried to port this game directly from the
32-bit arcade game. The seven characters look like there was a lot of
detail put into them, but because of that, the game runs incredibly
slow. There's no slow down, pretty much because it can't possibly go
any slower. The dionosaurs and primates, look good when they don't
move. But as soon as they move, you realize "unfluid" movement,
meaning the characters move VERY choppy. The backrounds look good,
each level has a different one. But they add little to the game. Each
character also has several "special" moves. These graphics are the
best in the entire game, but they only look cool...they run too slow
to have any effect.
Music and Sound [8/10]:
There's a different music theme for each level/character. The music is
really cool in this game, it's not dull, or boring or annoying like some
fighting games that are out there.
The sound effects are pretty good too. Every type of punch has a
completely different sound from other punches. The special moves also
have their own unique sound. The developer definitly did a great job
on this cartridge.
Game Play [7/10]:
There's seven characters are Blizzard-a blue ape, Diablo-a red T-Rex,
Chaos-a disgusting red ape, Armadon-a cross/triceratops and
Stegasaurous, Tolon-a raptor, Vertigo- a snake like dino, and Saroun a
brown T-rex. Each character has their own moves, powers and
weaknesses. But the only part of this game, that actually was good, is
the two player versus mode. The regular game is too easy or hard,
there is no in between. The game also runs too slow for any amount of
fun.
Challenge and Replay [6/10]:
There is either too much challenge or too little in this game. Even
though there is ten different difficulty settings for Primal Rage,
there is a noticable jump between the five and six levels. The game
doesn't give average players anything to work with.
The only replay value in this game is the 2-player mode. After beating
the game, you find yourself wanting to sell the game..because it
really isn't worth what ever you paid for it ;)
Conclussion/Overall [6.7/10]:
Primal Rage is an OK game. It has poor controls, and even worst game
play. The arcade version wasn't great, but it was'nt as bad as this.
If you really like dinosaurs, I guess this game is for you, or even if
you find it for five bucks. But there are better SNES fighers out
there, and this one runs on the expensive side.
